Pulp flow fluctuation in screening
|
|
  |
|
Problem Statement
The problem at the case mill (Stora Enso Imatra Pulp Mill, Finland) was occasional but very powerful pulp flow fluctuation in pulp screening plant. |
Improvement Approach
The case mill didnīt have adequate analysis tools to use in problem solving. KCL-WEDGE process analysis system with remote data connection was installed at the case mill.
KCL process specialists analysed the problem on site and remotely using KCL-WEDGE |
Benefits
The origin of the fluctuation could be located with the tools used. When the origin of fluctuation is known it usually can be removed. Removal of the fluctuation leads to increased pulp production capacity.
On-line data connection between the case mill |

The problem at the case mill (Stora Enso Imatra Pulp Mill, Finland) was occasional but very powerful pulp flow fluctuation in pulp screening plant. This fluctuation was the bottleneck for the pulp production. The origin of the fluctuation was not known. |

The case mill didnīt have adequate analysis tools to use in problem solving. KCL-WEDGE process analysis system with remote data connection was installed at the case mill.
KCL-WEDGE is a software tool designed for management of process data and the analysis of process fluctuations. This software is typically used to reduce quality fluctuations in the final product, as well as to increase production efficiency. KCL-WEDGE is widely used in the European paper industry.
KCL process specialists analysed the problem on site and remotely using KCL-WEDGE analytical tools.
In addition to analytical origin of fluctuation approach KCL study contained following sub-studies:
·Pulp air content study with manual analyser
·Control loop study
·Dissolved calcium study at the case mill bleaching plant
First two of the sub-studies were carried out during the case mill visits. For dissolved calcium study on-line calcium analyser was installed.

The origin of the fluctuation could be located with the tools used. When the origin of fluctuation is known it usually can be removed. Removal of the fluctuation leads to increased pulp production capacity.
The mathematical tools provided by KCL-WEDGE enable production engineers and operators to systematically monitor and analyze process changes and fluctuations. In the method development the expertise of process specialists and mathematicians is combined. Mathematical analyses are packaged in powerful tools for resolving process-related issues.
On-line data connection between the case mill and KCL enabled remote data analysis by KCL specialists. This improves the cost-effectiveness and response time of the analysis.
Variation in pulp air content typically produces dicciculties in screening. By manual air content study some air-generating process stages could be detected.
Malfunctioning control loops are often a reason for fluctuations. Control loop study revealed some malfunctioning loops. Controller parameters of these loops were adjusted to reach better operation.
Dissolved calcium study gave new information about the behaviour of calcium in a certain bleaching stage.
